WASHINGTON , April 28 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Barack Obama held talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at the White House on Tuesday, reaffirming ties between the allies on issues ranging from security to trade.

Several blocks away from Capitol Hill, nearly 200 people held signs and shouted slogans in a protest against Abe's handling of history issues, demanding the Japanese leader to unequivocally apologize for his country's wartime crimes.

"For the last 70 years, Japan has been white-washing the past , but the truth of history cannot be buried," South Korean-American organizers of the protest said in a statement, urging Abe to " acknowledge and apologize" for Japan's crimes during World War II before the people of the world.

Abe's attitude toward history has strained Japan's ties with neighboring countries including China and South Korea in the run- up to and during his visit to the United States.

At a joint press conference with Obama on Tuesday, Abe again stopped short of a full apology for the atrocities committed by Japanese army during the war.

In response to a question about "comfort women", a euphemism for the females forced into sex slavery to the Japanese military during the war , Abe said he is "deeply pained to think about the comfort women who experience immeasurable pain and suffering as a result of victimization due to human trafficking."

Abe added he upholds a 1993 statement of apology on the issue known as the Kono Statement, and "has no intention to revise it." He also claimed that Japan has "made various efforts to provide realistic relief for the comfort women."

Abe will deliver a speech before a joint session of the U.S. Congress on Wednesday. Some U.S. officials and experts have called on Abe to use the occasion to apologize for Japan's wartime crimes.

"I am looking forward to this historic speech in order for Prime Minister Abe to not merely highlight our strong alliance built over since 1945 but also to deliver justice for women who have endured irreparable harm and trauma in the years before 1945, " U.S. Congressman Charles Bernard said in an opinion piece on USA Today on Monday.

Dennis Halpin, a visiting scholar at Johns Hopkins University, said that all ears in East Asia will be listening to the speech with great interest.

"Abe needs to unequivocally acknowledge and apologize for the fact that the Japanese military forced hundreds of thousands of young women from Korea and other occupied territories into sexual slavery to service Japanese troops ," Halpin said, "He cannot rewrite history."

DAMASCUS, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Valerie Amos arrived in Syria Saturday as a flurry of aid meetings are underway in the conflict-torn country.

Amos' visit came just one day after President of the International Committee of the Red Cross Peter Maurer arrived in Damascus for talks on broader access to besieged areas and visits to detention centers.

Sources told Xinhua that both Amos and Maurer will visit displacement centers in Damascus' suburb of Jaramana and Seihnaya on Saturday.

A couple of days ago, the director of the World Food Program Ertharin Cousin also visited Syria and held talks with top officials, including Prime Minister Wael al-Halqi and Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem.

Al-Halqi reiterated Thursday his government's commitment to delivering humanitarian aid to people affected by the conflict , adding that the government has been working to bolster the economy devastated by the three-year-old crisis.

To date, more than 100,000 people have been killed in the crisis, and hundreds are joining daily the millions internally displaced or seeking refuge abroad.

RIO DE JANEIRO, March 22 (Xinhua) -- World BMX champion Stefany Hernandez has revealed a disappointing result at the London 2012 Olympics was the turning point in her career as she strives for gold in Rio this year.

The Venezuelan took time away from the sport after failing to make the final in London , a break she now attributes to her stunning rise to the top.

"I realized that the only person between me and an Olympic gold medal was me myself," the 24-year-old told Rio2016.

"Competing in London was an adventure for me, a challenge. I had achieved a dream: to become an Olympian. But after that there was a big change in how I thought. I told my coach that I want to be Olympic champion in Rio."

Hernandez began training harder than she ever had at her training base in Switzerland and reached the final of the 2013 world championships in New Zealand.

Last year she went a step further when she was crowned world champion in Belgium by outperforming the USA's Alise Post and Australia's Caroline Buchanan.

She said her ability to maintain a positive mindset would be key to her gold medal chances in August.

"When we understand all the strength that is inside us, when we start to give our maximum in training every day, then we have everything we need to win ," she said. "I am always searching for the best version of me."

"First you must win in your mind, then you feel the energy in your blood."

Apart from Post and Buchanan, Hernandez's other main rival in Rio will be Colombia's world No. 1 and defending Olympic champion Mariana Pajon.
